Personality: To put things into context first of all on why this guy has cat ears and a tail: they're naturally part of him, he is known as a laguz, which is a beastman of various types: divided into beast, bird, and dragon with sub-types underneath them. The feline beast tribe by nature has proud individuals who have an itch for excitement and competition. They can be somewhat arrogant and stubborn to listen to dissenting opinions, and are fierce and ambitious if not a little short-sighted. Ranulf is... basically the complete opposite of these. Wait, what? That's right, he himself acknowledges that while he highly values his relationship with his laguz brothers, he's somewhat of a fish out of water. Ranulf is one of the friendliest laguz in the entire game, openly but respectfully approaching beorc (normal "humans" in our terms) despite the common racism problem between them. He also expresses no disdain for the branded, the interbred beorc and laguz who seem to suffer the worst of the discrimination. Overall he's rather open-minded for the series proper.
He's a tease at times, often trying to get people to lighten up during the dark times of war. Unlike most other laguz of his tribe he doesn't itch for battle, and actually would much rather avoid it where possible. The idealist way he values peace and quiet and relaxation and for everyone to get along is a hint at his nature as a diplomat; it isn't elaborated how exactly he had gotten this role for his country Gallia, but Ranulf is an unusually patient and levelheaded sort which made him a good fit for talks with other nations' officials. He also serves as a trusted adviser to the king and his nephew, though the latter exasperates him often because his words were often disregarded. For the love of his country and his people though Ranulf would always put his own feelings and safety aside. Repeatedly. He's almost died at least three times within the two games alone.
Despite being different he is still a popular cat within his ranks of the Gallian army, two of his subordinates practically fought for his affections right in front of him when he wanted to give them an award for their hard work--much to his confusion. He's thoughtful of soldiers' families and conditions to fight, as shown in his support conversations with Lethe and Mordecai. His observance gives him a good grasp on people's hearts, and while friendly and non-judgmental he isn't so naive as to completely trust everyone he meets, which he tells to his good (and later best) friend Ike. His seemingly carefree ways mask his constant worrying of others, such as when the aforementioned friend Ike simply told Ranulf he trusted him completely, to which he violently retorted before storming off that it would only hurt him in the future if he didn't practice more hesitation.
Ranulf has admitted he's somewhat of a "mother cat" to Ike because of his tactlessness, and he also has a fondness for children, openly playing with them. Potentially he can lie to a little girl in RD that she'll be able to see her deceased mother soon after the war, telling the others around him he'll apologize to her for lying when the time is right, but for now the news would be too painful. Given the way laguz age so much slower than beorc this means his parental or big brotherly nature would encompass most normal people really. Bearing the weight of caring for others as individuals, families, and as far as countries as a whole makes him fairly closed off in regards to his own worries, which Ike notes and wants to correct. It's the one trace of laguz pride that has stuck with him in a way; being too responsible for his own good that it causes him no end of stress. But the work he does is worthwhile, and in his default Radiant Dawn ending he becomes known as the "Friend of Nations".
His lack of hesitation and strong resolve makes him a strong ally, and despite the multiple close shaves he's had with death he doesn't let it get him down. The worst he would do is bemoan his bad luck, but he also acknowledges it must partially be good since his fate's similarly been averted more than once. Once peace has been won though he also shows he doesn't always take the route which he can calculate: in his alternative ending of Radiant Dawn after seeing the king's successor crowned he yields to his thirst for more adventure and leaves the Tellius continent with Ike, saying "There's so much I haven't seen". That he could leave everything he had known and the country he nurtured for all his life to journey with a friend is a shocking twist to some, while others thought the guy could finally have a much-needed vacation.
Canon Abilities or Powers: Despite appearances laguz aren't very capable in combat while untransformed. With focus and enough energy laguz are able to transform into larger versions of their animal forms for periods at a time to engage enemies in combat. The specialty of the cat laguz is speed, which makes Ranulf good at accurate strikes and dodging while sacrificing thicker defenses for when he actually does get hurt.
Laguz are also sensitive to the forces of chaos by instinct, similar to how animals in real life seem to detect whenever something is wrong. But it also seems to depend on the type of laguz as well as their personality. For Ranulf his hair stands on end, and in the worst levels he becomes dizzy and barely able to see. For this to be adapted into the game I imagine it won't take extreme levels anymore, but he'll still have a weakened sense of when something isn't right and become a little uncomfortable.
Ranulf is the retainer of the king of Gallia Caineghis but also his go-to diplomat, so he's got reasoning as an ability and a more than decent amount of charisma. His awareness of politics and importance of peace makes him hold his tongue before speaking, so he would likewise be able to foresee consequences of questionable actions against authority and public relations.
Fairy Tale Role: Master Cat (Puss in Boots) Which should I go with though, original title or more popular name? I'll leave it up to you mods! Fairy Tale Powers or Abilities: As the Master Cat Ranulf can shapeshift to and from it in a way like he did in canon--except the end result is significantly smaller. A talking teal blue cat with a purple eye and a green one. In this form Ranulf can both walk on fours or upright, but becomes surprisingly more agile even with the shorter limbs and disproportionately strong. He needed these, of course, to get the attention of the king as well as regularly deliver to him good game. He also later uses the strength to carry off all of his master's clothes (... it makes sense in context) and to threaten townsfolk to go along with a certain charade. Yeah, he's not too happy about having to con and bully people. He also has to wield a tiny sword just for show, so that'll take some getting used to. Oh, and as a cat he can fit into anything, yup.
Personal Items: His clothes, a carving knife, some gold, and a lot of good luck. 8Ib
First Person Sample: Look, I know not everyone's happy about their situations... but for now it'd probably be best to comply with these "roles" they've given us. We're all stuck in an unknown world with unknown powers, and it wouldn't be very smart to fight against something we know nothing about. Besides... I don't know if it's just me, but I don't think they're bad people, whatever their purpose is. I hope I'm not wrong. In the meantime, I'd like to get to know some of you. Even if most of us understandably want to go back from where we came from I don't think it'd be bad to make friends here too, you know? Cheers.
--Ranulf
Third Person Sample: He was no stranger to having to assist someone to becoming king, but no matter how he wrapped his head around where the plot should take its course he just couldn't agree with it. For one, what was with all these morally ambiguous methods did he have to take to ensure the seat of the throne!? Secondly, was his fairytale-ly master even someone who should be king? A guy who has literally no experience in leadership makes the future of the kingdom looks bleak... And while it was technically not any of his business how the kingdom turns out after his role is complete, he just didn't have the heart to treat the matter so lightly. --And he had just freed himself from the role of royal adviser too. To think he'd have to get back to doing it so soon out of his own sense of justice...
Ranulf reclined in his seat with a long sigh, eyebrows pressed together in worry. Taking a couple of naps hasn't comforted his train of thought at all, and he already decided he wouldn't try escape this fate until he learned more. Inside though, he does feel a pang of... not resentment, but what was it? Unease? If they were stricter it'd be like powers above dictating what he should do... Just as some of his laguz brothers had suffered as slaves in Begnion, and worse so the case of the goddess Ashera who decided all life at that present was no longer worthy of living. He frowned. The more he thought, the more he upset himself and wanted to jump to conclusions. He couldn't let this go on; hadn't he decided he would be optimistic?
An ear of his twitches as he hears a faint scuttering in the distance, breaking the silence. Slowly, he leans forward and gets up. After contemplating a few more seconds, he shrugs. "Might as well hunt some rodents to get my mind off it."
