✒ IC Name: Berthier (full name Berthierite, but most people call him 'Berthie') Canon: Ningyou Kyuutei Gakudan Canon Point: chapter 13! Age: looks to be in his early twenties—but because this is a Kaori Yuki manga and because he’s a ‘philomela’ whose bodies are ‘frozen in time’, it’s unknown just how old he is. He’s probably a lot older than he looks.
Personality:
Bethier (commonly known as ‘Berthie’, full name ‘Berthierite’) is… a piece of work, to say the least. The first thing anyone notices about him his that he is down-right nutsy. The fact that he was originally a candidate to the throne (which is a fairly violent occupation in its own right) but disqualified due to his violent tendencies really says a lot about his character. Whenever he is appears in the manga, he is generally depicted swinging his sword around, being violent to other characters, often with at least a corpse or two in the frame. This is often anyone’s first impression of him, and it’s generally their last.
On the offset, he is a cruel, sadistic character who is delighted by the suffering of others. He enjoys taunting, provoking and crushing others, shown by his cruel ministrations towards Carnelian and his constant iteration that the other man is useless. He seems highly perceptive towards the weaknesses of others, and shows no abandon in the way he uses that information for his own purposes. He is also not above lying to others, even if it’s just for his own amusement rather than any real sense of falsehood. Take the example of his lie to le senat—despite the fact that le senat were the ones who revived him after his death, he shows no deference towards them and treats them as flippantly as he treats everyone else around him. He holds no loyalty to le senat, even though circumstances dictate that any other man would’ve. Common sense and societal expectations mean nothing to Berthier.
On the subject of loyalty, he is a bit of an oddball. In a way, Lucille is the only one who holds any semblance of loyalty from him, and this is interesting, because his loyalty towards Lucille first manifested as a willingness to do anything he said, and later, after his death, as a deep desire to keep anyone else from killing Lucille before he can. This behaviour and loyalty, which is almost a dependence of a sort, stems from his shared past with Lucille. While Lucille didn’t necessarily know it, Berthier was also a Philomela (a genderless being) developed from the original queen’s cells. Because of this, and because of Berthier’s upbringing, which was probably every bit as screwed up and lonely as the childhoods of everyone else in this series, he took to Lucille, whom he thought was the only person who could understand him. Who told him that it was alright to exist. You can see an example of his dependency towards Lucille’s character there. And once Lucille began seeing him as a monster, just like how everyone else saw him, there was a sense that the only person who thought that he had a right to exist now could not accept him. It’s because of this that he kills himself out of spite. His past serves to illustrate his unstable mindset, his dependence towards Lucille that’s almost crippling: he needs a reason to exist. A reason to live. In the beginning, the reason to live was Lucille’s acceptance. Now, his reason to live is his vengeance towards that same Lucille who ‘rejected’ him.
No personality profile of Berthier is complete without a paragraph on his love for Lucille. Indeed, Berthier is very verbal and physical about his love for Lucille. Violently verbal and physical. Most of his characterization and motivations revolve around this love for Lucille. Basically, he is like that one super clingy ex-boyfriend that nobody wishes they had. That being said, anyone who gets in between him and Lucille is due for a confrontation. He seeks to torment those who are close to Lucille, shown by his needlessly violent confrontation with Gwindel and Kohaku that ended with one of the latter losing an arm, and by the way he keeps Carnelian, who hates Lucille, on a tight leash and a life of humiliation and servitude. He even stabs Spinel, who is important to Lucille, and kidnaps Eles (Celes), who’s often said to be Lucille’s last hope. He professes that he enjoys seeing Lucille squirm, which puts his love for the man in a very twisted light. However, he is not completely irredeemable—despite his constant tormenting of Lucille and of Lucille’s friends, he never outright fully kills any of them (Spinel notwithstanding, seeing as he did stab her in the chest, but she did end up healing all-right on her own). He also protects Lucille fiercely, noting that he will not let Lucille die before he has a chance to kill him himself. Finally, while he has yet to reach that point in canon, at the end of the manga, he comes to accept Lucille’s words and allows himself to be pseudo-killed by Lucille’s hands (again). While he is jealous and possessive, he is also strangely selfless towards Lucille, which is both a positive and negative trait, when you think about it.
Despite everything he does, however, he is not insensitive to the feelings of others. The fact that he can pick out people’s weaknesses easily seem to indicate that he is very perceptive, even on an emotional level. However, understanding and empathizing with other people’s pain might prove to be too much for him. You can say that for him, there are only two people in the world—himself and Lucille, and everyone else is just background noise. That’s the extent of his obsession.
Other things: he is exuberant and has very little sense of personal space, at least when it comes to Lucille. He is an excellent fighter, highly skilled and seems to move solely on intuition rather than any real technique. He has a Cheshire Cat motif going on in the manga, going as far as to wear a cat-mask and generally exhibiting cat-like features in chibi form for comedy’s sake. He has a keen sense of smell, capable of distinguishing between people by smell alone. He also seems highly misogynistic, as he repeatedly refers to the smell of women as a ‘stench’, and dislikes lingering where many women gather, such as a convent. His piano playing is often described as a haunting, painful sound, and in a series where music reflects a person’s inner state, this says a lot about him.
As Berthier is not a main character in Ningyou Kyuutei Gakudan, his history wasn’t entirely embellished. What we do know is that he was one of the ‘queen candidates’ in the series – a Philomela – and that he met Lucille, wherein Lucille became the sole being in the world who acknowledged his right to live. The two traveled around as a part of the secret royal orchestra, in order to investigate the guignols and destroy them. Lucille sang, while Berthier played the piano, and acted as an all-round bodyguard. During this time, the once-genderless Berthier took on masculine traits. However, Berthier’s destructive nature eventually caused Lucille to fear him, which, essentially, breaks what little human heart Berthier had left and caused him to kill himself out of spite. Timeskip, and le senat revives Berthier. He begins stalking Lucille across the continent for most of the story, heckling his friends, cutting people’s arms off, and generally being a recurring villain.
Canon Abilities or Powers:
Berthier’s main ability is swinging around a large, tuning-fork-like sword and having the uncanny ability to do a lot of bodily harm to basically everyone he meets. He is extremely skilled in combat, and what he makes up for in the lack of magic he does with brute strength, speed and ruthlessness alone. He is more or less unmatched in his canon, and he is very axe-happy. It’s unknown if his super strength and speed is a result of him being a Philomela or not, but it is know that prior to his (first) death, he already exhibited his killing abilities. Also, as a Philomela, it’s assumed that he can also sing. He never exhibits this trait in canon, but it’s assumed that he also possesses an angelic voice capable of mildly affecting others. For the purposes of rp, however, and since he never actually sings in canon, I’m going to assume that cutting off his head and stitching it back on again had some affect on his vocal capabilities, and he no longer can sing like a true Philomela. Philomela are also born genderless, but it’s confirmed in canon that Berthier took on masculine traits for Lucille’s (unwilling) sake, so that Lucille can become his ‘queen’.
His other ability, which happily has nothing to do with killing, is his ability to play the piano. His piano-playing talent is rare, and he is a very proficient musician.
Other abilities include: being able to detect the gender of people by smell alone (somehow) and always knowing where Lucille is (somehow).
Fairy Tale Role:The Persian King from One Thousand and One Nights
Fairy Tale Powers or Abilities:
» EXECUTION. The emperor from One Thousand and One Nights is known for having the power to ruthlessly execute people as he sees fit. Berthier, who already possesses natural killing capabilities, will inherit this power. Essentially, once a day, he is capable of choosing one individual for a ‘sure kill’. Essentially, he can pick out a victim to execute, and no matter what happens that individual will die by the end of the day by his blade.
Yes, this is extremely god-modey. But there is a catch—
❧ Berthier is unable to kill anyone if they are telling a story. To reflect One Thousand and One Nights, in which the Persian King refrains from killing Scheherazade because he is curious about the ending to the stories that she tells him nightly, so long as his victim is telling a story, Berthier cannot harm them. It doesn’t matter how long the story is – so long as the story has a beginning, middle, an end, characters and a conflict, it counts as a story. ❧ If the individual that he is attacking successfully completes their story, they are then safe from Berthier for the rest of the day. Essentially, by successfully telling a story to Berthier, Berthier cannot kill them. He can try again the next day, but if he’s told another story the next day, he is once again unable to kill his victim. ❧ However, if the individual fails to complete their story, or completely stops in the middle of their story-telling, Berthier can still kill them. ❧ To copy what Sele has written above—the story must be told orally. Written stories do not count, and cannot prevent Berthier from harming the character. ❧ Only the character who is being targeted can tell the story—essentially, that character’s friend cannot tell a story to Berthier in order to spare that character. The story must come from that character themselves. ❧ If Berthier has already heard that story from that character, he is also still able to kill them. The story needs to be one that Berthier has never heard from that character before.
As the Persian King, Berthier will also gain an inexplicable hatred of women. But he already had a hatred of women prior to this, so maybe this isn’t such a huge change after all…

However, anyone who has been trained musically will immediately realize the beauty of this tune, the complexity of it, the haunting chords and the thundering double-stops. Again and again, the lines appear on the page, the notes appearing one after another as though in a frenzy.
And then, when the page has all but been filled, words appear at the bottom. ]
For my queen, Lucille. The most beauteous of tunes for the most beauteous of people. The tragic chords to the tragedy of life. Wouldn’t you say it’s fitting? This song is for you, Lucille, and no other. Aren't you glad?
Should you not rejoice!
[ and then, viciously, large, skewed lines begin appearing on the page, as though the person who had composed that song has begun scratching it out out of maniac glee. Horrible lines scratch themselves across the page until there all you can see is bleeding ink. ]
The thing about Berthier is that waking up in an unfamiliar world is nothing new. Familiar places mean nothing to him. Back when he was alive, scenery was but backdrop to the events in his life. Similar, after he had been resurrected, he had no such attachments to the locations around him. They eventually became a blur of blood and destruction, bitter, angry places that compose of nothing he particularly cares about. This is because the only thing that matters in his life is people. One person in particular. Lucille. If Lucille is there, then he needs nothing else.
This is why, when he awakens in a new and unfamiliar location, with the sky above him and the gentle sounds of pedestrians nearby, he only, laughingly, thinks that at least this time his head is still attached to his head. He gets up without another thought, checking for his mask, his sword. And Lucille—well, of course Lucille isn’t here. He’s never here when he needs him. This is why the only logical thing to do next is to look for the only thing that matters.
The air is fresh, the people are loud, pressing, annoying. He picks the highest vantage point he can see—the top of a tower, and clambers to the top.
There is no hesitation to his actions—it’s unthinkable, after all, that he would be in a place without Lucille. He only needs him, after all. So there’s nothing left to do but to begin searching.
After all, isn’t that what he has done all his life?
