❅ Applications
Indefinitely.
To apply for a character, fill out the correct application down below and post it a comment on this entry. Please do not link applications in your journal or delete the comments once your application is processed. Let us know if you would like your application screened. Apps open on the first of every month and remain open for one week, during which time the mods will begin processing. We're optimistic and hope you'll get the result of your app within a day, but some may take longer depending on the familiarity of the mods with the canon, and the number of apps received in that cycle. If four or more days pass with no response then we suggest you contact a mod. You can reserve and apply for two characters per app cycle. Currently, players are allowed a maximum of three characters in-game at any given time. Applications will be judged primarily on the personality section of the character in question, and how the player intends to adapt them into their new role. For this part we're mostly interested in what you plan to do with their powers and new destiny, not how the character will react to it. We'll see that in-game! Since any OC applications must fall in the range of fairy tales that already exist in the world of Myth Making, these will be held to a higher expectation. Processing will result in applications being accepted or denied, or revisions requested. Don't worry if you're asked for revisions! It means we're interested in your app, but require more information about something. We'll let you know what that is. If you are asked for revisions, you'll be given one week to provide them. You are allowed to re-use sections of applications you wrote previously, so don't worry about rewriting your entire personality section. Do NOT plagiarise any part of another player's application for your own, as this will result in an instant ban. ✒ IC
Name: Mogget
Canon: Old Kingdom trilogy
Canon Point: Near the end of the first book, Sabriel, when Mogget returns Sabriel's sword and bell to her in Ancelstierre.
Age: Unknown, probably over 2000 years. But he looks like an ordinary adult cat.
Personality: Always self-serving, Mogget doesn't really care about anybody else. He looks out for himself first and foremost and won't help others unless forced to or if there's something in it for him. In an ideal world, he'd leave others alone and they would leave him alone too. In reality, this policy backfired on him in the past and he's been paying for it ever since. Once he was the Eighth Bright Shiner, a powerful Free Magic entity. Now he's a servant of the Abhorsen, bound by magical means.
Mogget is the kind of servant who helps because he must, but that doesn't mean he has to be enthusiastic about it. Or all that helpful, even. He's sarcastic, sly and frequently condescending. His attitude tends to be long-suffering and he's prone to lecturing others at length, both traits inherited from long years of telling Abhorsens what they should already know. He seems to have a fondness for proclaiming doom and gloom. He's one of life's cynics.
He's sharp-eyed and sharp-witted, quick to observe what other characters themselves may not realize. For example, he teases Sabriel about her attraction to Touchstone. He likes to needle people. It's a source of amusement and one small way of levelling the playing field.
Being bound in a corporeal form for so long, the feline lifestyle has imprinted itself upon him. He loves fish, enjoys chasing mice and displays a lot of general cat-like behaviour. He's even affected by catnip. Mogget indulges these feline desires at whim. For example, he doesn't actually need to eat, he just likes to.
All in all, Mogget may seem like a harmless if slightly grumpy cat. However, he isn't entirely diminished. Resigned to his situation he may be, but there is still the Free Magic being lurking inside him and thus the hope of regaining his freedom is always there. The Abhorsens are rightly wary of Mogget for that very reason. If freed, he would try to kill them. Centuries of imposed slavery have only increased Mogget's appetite for revenge. Unbound, he'll seek out anyone who commanded him in his bound form, torture them slowly, then kill them. Anyone he has ever had a grudge against won't be safe either, and Mogget has a long memory for grudges.
This specific desire for revenge aside, Mogget isn't really evil. His default setting is neutral. He might be malicious towards those he doesn't like, but it tends to be reactive rather than active. He doesn't go looking for trouble. He's not out to make enemies and his instinct is to run rather than fight. Anyway, he'd rather have a nap than waste his time making others miserable, though he's unlikely to waste his time being friendly either.
After all, there are better things for him to do. Mice to hunt, fish to eat. Despite the long years, increasing weariness, and general suspicion of everyone around him, it is possible to earn his respect. Respect his autonomy and Mogget will do likewise. It also helps if you feed him lots of fish.
History: Mogget's history goes back to the very beginning, when all magic was Free Magic and Free Magic beings roamed all over the world. Of these, there were Nine Bright Shiners that were the most powerful of all. The Eighth was Yrael, now known as Mogget.
The most powerful of the Shiners was the Ninth: Orannis, the Destroyer. Orannis lived up to his name by attempting to destroy the world, forcing the other Bright Shiners to stand against him. But Yrael refused to take sides. Though he admired the Destroyer's power from afar, he wouldn't ally with it. It's not in his nature to wantonly destroy. And he refused to ally with the other Seven Bright Shiners, because quite frankly they were going on a suicide mission trying to stop the Destroyer and Yrael preferred being alive and whole, thank you very much. He couldn't care less what happened to everything else as long as it didn't affect him. He just wanted to stay out of the whole thing. And so Orannis was defeated by the Seven.
It was the Seven too who created the Charter, which largely replaced Free Magic. Now, Yrael wanted absolutely nothing to do with the Charter. To infuse himself into the Charter as the Seven had done would mean literally losing himself, and Yrael didn't want that either. So he ran away. But the power of the Seven proved too strong for him in the end. They caught him and he was bound by Charter magic and made to serve the magic he so despised.
There are five Great Charters which are the source of all Charter magic in the Old Kingdom. Two of these are objects: the Great Stones and the Wall which separates the Old Kingdom from the non-magical world beyond. Three of them are bloodlines of people in the Old Kingdom who are sworn to serve the Charter: the royal line, the Clayr (witches who see into the future) and the Abhorsens, necromancers who wield magical bells to protect the kingdom from the Dead. It is this last bloodline that Mogget was made to serve.
Since then, Mogget has served many generations of Abhorsens. He doesn't actually get out all that much. Most of the time, he's kept at Abhorsen's House. There he presumably spent most of his time sleeping, eating and occasionally offering advice when asked (and sometimes when not, because in his view, Abhorsens are frequently stupid).
Things changed two hundred years ago when a prince of the royal line turned against the Charter. His name was Rogir, but when he became a Free Magic sorcerer and necromancer, he started calling himself Kerrigor. The power of the Charter restricted Kerrigor's influence, so Kerrigor sought to break it. He almost succeeded. He destroyed two of the Great Stones, thus corrupting one of the Great Charters. The Queen and all her daughters were killed, destroying all that was left of the royal line, another Great Charter. (Someone of royal blood did survive, but he was trapped as a lump of wood for two hundred years so he wasn't much use in the interim.)
Mogget was there in the first battle against Kerrigor when the Queen was killed and the Great Stones broken. Since then, he has worked alongside each Abhorsen to try and stop Kerrigor and help restore the Old Kingdom. However, although Kerrigor has become one of the Greater Dead, no Abhorsen has ever been able to send him to his final rest.
With the Charter weakened and no king or queen, the Old Kingdom went into decline. There followed an Interregnum; a regent ruled for the next one hundred and eighty years, and for the twenty after that no-one ruled. The Old Kingdom during the events of the first book, Sabriel, has no government and no law. And the corruption of the Charter spread. It affected Mogget too. He is literally unable to speak of the corruption or the Great Charters or anything that might be remotely useful to Sabriel, to her great frustration.
Which brings us to the fifty third Abhorsen, Sabriel. Brought up outside the Old Kingdom in the non-magical country of Ancelstierre, she returns to the Old Kingdom to search for her missing father. Mogget guides her to the kingdom's capital city where they find her father trapped in Death. (Death being a place that necromancers can step in and out of at will.) Sabriel rescues her father, but it's too late for him; he's spent too long in Death and isn't long for this world. He tells her to find Kerrigor, the Greater Dead enemy that trapped him, in Ancelstierre. Sabriel flees while her father and Mogget hold off the Dead surrounding them.
Sabriel's father unleashes Mogget's true form and his last command before he dies is to tell Mogget to take his sword and bell to Sabriel. Mogget does so, returning just as Sabriel is being attacked by Kerrigor in Ancelstierre.
Canon Abilities or Powers: As Abhorsen's servant, Mogget is bound in the shape of a cat. Like any ordinary cat, he has excellent night vision, can scratch, hunt, climb etc. Unlike an ordinary cat, he can also talk, read, write, sketch, and reach the top of ladders without anyone knowing how he did it. He doesn't need to eat, although that certainly won't stop him from doing so. He can shapeshift. In the books, he's shown taking the form of a cat and an albino dwarf-man. It's implied that he can or could take other forms too.
But the only thing keeping Mogget a servant is the collar he wears. If another character removes Mogget's collar, his true form will be unleashed. And Mogget's true form is Yrael, the Eighth Bright Shiner, a Free Magic being of ancient magic and incredible power. Unbound, he can change shape, fly and cast Free Magic, which corrodes and burns everything it touches. He can incinerate someone with a single touch. His favourite element is fire, which he can create and manipulate as he pleases. He can shroud an area in darkness, or shine brightly to light it up. He can also use magic to slow down or cushion objects.
He's nearly invulnerable in his unbound form. No physical attack can harm him. A weapon spelled by magic would be able to strike him, but would only slow him down. Only the most powerful magic can truly harm him; anything less would be absorbed.
Obviously, the lesson here is not to remove Mogget's collar. But if you do happen to be so foolish, the collar has an inbuilt safety mechanism. Whenever Mogget serves a new Abhorsen, he coughs up a silver ring set with a ruby. This ring is the key to stopping his unbound form. It will grow hot and expand so that it can be thrown over the Free Magic being and, with the help of the Abhorsen's bells, bind him again. In this way, it becomes safer for the Abhorsen to unleash his true form in a time of dire need, knowing that he can be bound again.
Fairy Tale Role: Genie of the Lamp (Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp)
Fairy Tale Powers or Abilities: As a powerful djinni, Mogget will be able to change shape, become invisible, and travel anywhere almost instantly. He's a spirit made from fire, so his natural form (aka the one he'll use to scare people) will resemble his Free Magic form. In the story, he builds a palace for Aladdin, brings him food on gold and silver plates, and piles him with truly ridiculous amounts of jewels, money and slaves. Most of that is done within seconds; the palace takes him a day. It seems he can grant (almost) any wish.
...But with phenomenal cosmic power there comes a catch, of course. This being the lamp. Mogget will be slave to the lamp and therefore slave to whomever holds the lamp. To limit him while no one holds the lamp, I'll say that he can't make use of his powers other than shape-changing/invisibility/quick travel, except to fulfil the will of his master. So no conjuring himself a palace. He can also be banished inside the lamp by its master; rubbing the lamp will call him out again. Otherwise he'll wander around as he pleases except when summoned by the power of the lamp. Only the master of the lamp can set him free.
Last thing: I won't use these powers to break the game. Mogget won't be able to send anyone home or bring anyone from another world into the game, because his powers only operate within the confines of the fairy-tale world. Nor will he be able to mess around with time or undo the magic of entities more powerful than himself.
Personal Items: One red leather collar, set with a small metal bell. It changes depending on his shape e.g. in human form, it's a belt he wears around his waist. This is a magical item from his canon that I'd like to adapt for this setting, to be a physical marker of his status as slave of the lamp. It can't be removed except by the master of the lamp in order to free him.
One dirty old copper oil lamp, which will appear with Mogget when he drops into the game. He'll be so thrilled when he learns what it is.
First Person Sample: [Written to himself as a personal journal. Not intended for anyone else to read.]
This taste of free will is almost painful. If only I could be rid of the lamp, I might enjoy living out my days here. Having learned the story, I suppose it's only a matter of time before my freedom is lost to some oaf cleaning a dirty lamp. The best I can do is hide it.
The magic here is unfamiliar, but seems as far-ranging as the Charter. There may yet be some way of freeing myself of the thing. Will continue to explore.
Third Person Sample: Here's a Dear Mun post. Or some prose:
The sun was setting as Mogget and his master made their way through the streets of Sindle. Mogget was tired and he yawned widely as the Abhorsen trudged down the main street. It had been a routine if difficult day. Flush out the Dead lurking in the forest, banish them, then back to the town for some rest and recuperation. Mogget lay wrapped around the Abhorsen's neck like a furry scarf, watching with wary eyes as the light dwindled. He was thinking of the inn, and a warm pillow, and sleep. The Abhorsen paused at a street junction, apparently considering, then turned left. Mogget pressed his claws lightly into his master's neck.
"Ouch! If you're going to do that, you can jump down and walk."
"Going back to the alehouse, are we?" Mogget whispered. "I should have known."
"I think I deserve a drink after today, don't you?"
"You said that yesterday. And the day before that. And the day before that."
"Shut up and follow me."
The Abhorsen shrugged the cat off and Mogget leapt down to the ground. The world was all legs down here, darker and dirtier. Still, he was used to that. Mogget followed his master's heels nimbly, high stepping over the puddles. Then he stopped, twitching his nose as they arrived at the alehouse. The sound of rowdy laughter drifted outside, along with a strong smell of alcohol and sweat. The cat shuddered. It was bad enough that his master had turned to drink without him dragging Mogget along too.
"I refuse to go in there," he said. "I absolutely refuse. The place is disgusting, and smelly, and-"
He was backing away as he said it, along the line of the alehouse's walls, when there was a cry of "Watch out!", and all at once the sky poured. For one terrible long moment, the world was freezing and wet and horrible. Mogget yowled, streaking back towards the Abhorsen, whose frown had turned into a laugh. No apology drifted from the window above - nobody cared about a cat, after all, but it was the Abhorsen's amusement that really ruined Mogget's day. Cold and drenched, the cat stared up at his master and hissed.
"I hate this town!"
The Abhorsen was still laughing, and Mogget would have liked nothing more than to scratch him to death, but he was forbidden from properly harming his master. He settled for shaking his fur, scattering water droplets onto the Abhorsen's travel-stained cloak.
"There's no need for that!" the Abhorsen protested, shoving him aside with a heavy booted foot. "Come, my little drowned rat. Into the alehouse."
Still hissing under his breath, Mogget had no choice but to follow.
